The BC Meat Transition Assistance Program was formed in 2006 by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, industry and the BC Food Processors Association. The intent of MTAP is to encourage operators of existing unlicensed slaughter facilities in BC to undertake plant upgrades, and to encourage construction of new facilities in under-served regions to meet provincial Class A or B licensing standards under BC’s Meat Inspection Regulation.
MTAP is funded by the Province of British Columbia and provides 50-cent dollars, to a cap, to applicants for their projects. The BC Food Processors Association delivers the MTAP program. It also operated the complementary Meat Industry Enhancement Strategy (MIES). Where MTAP focuses on capital cost support, MIES focused on regulatory compliance support.
MTAP closed to new applications in November 2010. Applicants with projects still under way have been informed that all files will be closed permanently on 30 December 2012. All projects will need to be completed and final claims submitted before close of business on that date.
