Meat Industry Enhancement Strategy

The BC Meat Industry Enhancement Strategy was formed in 2004 by the then Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, industry and the BC Food Processors Association.  The project is funded by a grant from the Province of British Columbia; the lead agency is the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport.  The MIES goals are to ensure reasonable access to provincially licensed slaughter facilities for all BC regions and to increase licensed livestock slaughter capacity for all species and a basis for future expansion.  Since 2006, the MIES has facilitated abattoir operators’ compliance with the Meat Inspection Regulation and other regulatory requirements related to licensing through the services of its Help Desk, in addition to assisting applicants with their files under the Meat Transition Assistance Program (MTAP).  Since 2007, MIES has provided additional support to abattoir operators regarding waste management requirements and issues.  From 2009 to the present the MIES team has also been involved in the Remote Sites Consultation Project, one of several initiatives related to the meat processing industry announced by the Minister of Healthy Living and Sport in April 2009.

The MIES Team works primarily with operators of slaughter facilities (often referred to as abattoirs).
