Processing Plant Manager - Tofino, BC

The Processing Plant Manager advances the vision by providing leadership, overall management and direction to all aspects of salmon processing for the west coast from harvest consultation through processing to shipping to meet the strategic mandates of the departments.

Base Location: Tofino, BC

Responsibilities/Job Duties

  • With an awareness of the production cycle, be able to understand the importance of the production of premium quality fish from egg to plate to exceed customer satisfaction throughout the value chain
  • Lead the department through decisions that could impact service levels at a regional level yet are beneficial to the company wide operations while implementing and delivering on egg to plate process that minimizes risk to supply and maximizes profit
  • Direct the certification of processing for continual improvement processes that provide  world class certifications
  • Provides leadership and direction of the short and long-term goals of the processing from offloading to freight onboard processing to ensure that production remains within targets
  • Works with the Regional Production Manager to advise on adjusting production schedules as needed due to changing market or performance issues in order to maximize profits using quality decisions based on business mindedness and a long-term perspective
  • Collaborate with the Fish Health department in the directing of the Quality Management Program to ensure maximum food safety and quality through the processing flow that meets or exceeds regulatory compliance
  • Implements actions and programs that continually improve the processing of the salmon in collaboration with Fish Health and Saltwater
  • Liaises with the Regional Production Manager to develop, monitor and report out on biological, financial and capital budgetary plans to remain committed to quality and cost
  • Advises the Regional Production Manager on operational progress and issues formally and informally on a regular basis that reflects accurate and current information including risk assessments
  • Ensure the harvest and processing plan is well communicated to the department leaders for smooth and efficient processing
  • Continually improves operations by seeking out innovations, bringing forward new ideas and concepts in alignment with our strategic agendas
  • To describe the model of ‘Responsible Salmon for Life’
  • Direct the implementation and monitoring of the Management System that keeps to the corporate commitments
  • Operate the plant and all operating systems in alignment with our sustainability principles and meets or exceeds both federal and provincial environmental regulations
  • Monitor engagement and participation as needed to ensure quality First Nations partnerships
  • Implements and monitors all external certifications and audit standards to ensure continual improvement and trust is maintained or grown related to the product
  • Promotes compliance to all safety procedures to ensure the health and well-being of all persons in accordance with Provincial and Federal regulations
  • Promotes a positive workplace that treats all persons with respect and dignity devoid of discrimination, bullying and harassment
  • Collaborates with Management locally with a focus on customer service that keeps to the corporate commitments
  • Leads the department being mindful of the core values and leadership principles that guide all employees 
  • Leads the departments to ensure collaborative and efficient teamwork both internally and with other departments
  • Encourages the development of all direct reports to their maximum potential to ensure efficiency and engagement
  • Promotes the morale of all employees in the departments to keep engagement high and reduce turnover
  • Resolves complex problems that may require cross divisional support in such a manner that organizational goals and efficiency are maintained
  • In collaboration with Human Resources, makes recommendations and decisions concerning discipline for department employees that are fair and equitable
  • Establishes performance standards for all direct reports then evaluates and monitors progress in order to maximize the effectiveness of the department

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in a management role doing food processing of animal protein
  • HACCP Certified
  • Prior experience building productive and engaging work teams
  • Prior experience working with strategic budget & production goals
  • Solid knowledge of cross-cultural awareness and skilled at Aboriginal engagement for effective working relationships
  • Proven interpersonal and communications skills that drives results

Physical Job Requirements

Capable of boat, car and plane travel, as required
