BC Food Processors Association Critiques Farm Gate Meat Sales Bill
"The proposed Food Safety Amendment (Farm Gate Sales) Act takes a step backwards in protecting public health while doing nothing significant to help encourage safe, local food production," says Robin Smith, Chair of the Board of Directors of the BC Food Processors Association (BCFPA). "There are better ways to do this: and we are working on them." BC introduced the Meat Inspection Regulation in 2004. "BC has no choice but to join the rest of the world in response to increasing public health concerns about animal‐ and food‐borne disease," Smith emphasizes. "Livestock for meat should be processed in licensed plants, inspected by a third party, and the meat sold through clean, refrigerated facilities."
