B.C.’s agrifood and seafood sector had 6,100 more employees in 2016 according to data from Statistics Canada.

The sector’s growth to 62,900 employees in 2016 follows B.C. agrifood and seafood companies’ record revenue of $13 billion, and record exports of $3.5 billion in 2015.

The Statistics Canada numbers indicate 2,200 more British Columbians have jobs in primary agriculture like farming and ranching than a year ago, and 3,900 more have jobs with B.C.’s growing value-added processing companies. With increased support for the meat industry, the Province is better protecting British Columbians who buy meat, as well as the farmers and processors who produce it, Healthy Living and Sport Minister Mary Polak announced today. “We’re investing more to help processors finish getting their facilities licensed and deal with waste disposal,” said Polak. “We’re also increasing enforcement to ensure meat going to market is safe, and consulting with farmers in remote and isolated communities to help them find solutions to provide for their local communities.”

B.C. farmers and food processors continue to win the confidence of B.C. consumers. That’s the underlying message of a newly released study of public attitudes towards agriculture, food, and agri-food production in B.C. The study was conducted by Ipsos Reid Public Affairs of Vancouver. It was commissioned by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of B.C. (IAF), with input from the B.C. The provincial government has expanded a two-year, foreign worker pilot project under its Provincial Nominee Program to address labour shortages in the food processing industries, announced Murray Coell, Minister of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development.

Government is now providing additional support for small operators applying for Class C licenses in isolated communities that do not have access to licensed slaughter capacity. New applicants who meet these criteria can now qualify for a Class C license immediately, and will have until December 31, 2009 to submit their construction plans. A second update to the regulation provides support to those who have already made significant investments in becoming fully licensed, by providing a 100-kilometre protective zone around fully-licensed plants.
